Super Bowl XLIV

Feb. 7th, 2010.  Miami, FL. 

As the championship for the National Football League, the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in America and attracts the biggest names in sports and entertainment.  Ticket prices keep this game out of reach for most of us, but given the chance everyone should make it to this game once in their lives.

Stanley Cup Finals

Time and location changed based on playoff length and teams involved.  It is the best out of 7 championship series for the National Hockey League, and includes players from all over the world, mostly Canada, the United States, and Europe.  As the game that translates poorly to TV, the Stanley Cup finals are the only way to see hockey, a game full of passion and determination.

World Cup Final

July 11th, 2010.  Johannesburg, South Africa. 

The largest sporting event in the world, period.  It is the conclusion of a month long tournament and for some nations a three year long qualification process.  Countries involved in the final shut down completely to watch and root their teams on.  The passion of the fans and effort and skill of the players make this a must see game for everyone, soccer fan or not.

Gasparilla Pirate Invasion

Jan. 30th, 2010.  Tampa, FL. 

It’s one of the largest parades in the US commemorating Jose Gasper’s invasion of Tampa.  The Gasparilla Pirate Invasion runs along a 3.8 mile stretch of Tampa’s Bayshore Boulevard, which contains the world’s longest continuous sidewalk.  Hundreds of thousands of people will descend on South Tampa to enjoy a day of fun and debauchery.

World Series

Time and location changed based on playoff length and teams involved.  The Fall Classic comes around every year in late October or early November between the American and National League champions.  It’s baseballs championship and in its current form, since 1903, has consisted of a 7 game playoff.  The World Series has given us some of the most memorable moments in sports.  It’s an obvious choice for a must see sporting event, especially if your team is in it.

Wimbledon

June 21st-July 4th, 2010. London, England

The Championships at Wimbledon, running since 1877, the tennis tournament in London, England is played every summer.  Not only do you get to see some of the top notch tennis players in the world play against each other, but you get to spend two weeks in London.  A fortnight in England is reason enough for us to want to spend some time at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The Masters

End of Jun-beginning of Jul., Augusta, GA

One of the four major tournaments for golf, the Masters is held annually to obtain the coveted green jacket.  The best golfers in the world arrive in America to show how good they are in one of golf’s toughest courses.  The tradition and the skill on display makes this weekend in late June or early July a must see at least once.

NCAA Final Four

Apr 3rd-Apr 5th, Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis, IN

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament concludes with the Final Four.  Three games to determine a champion in what is easily the most exciting sports tournament in the country.  From Cinderella teams to perennial powers, men’s college basketball is a reminder of what we love about sports and what makes them great to watch.

NBA Finals

Begin April 17th, 2010.  Location determined by teams in the finals.  The best of 7 championship for the National Basketball League contains some of the most athletic players in any sport in the world.  What it lacks in passion from its college counterpart, it more than makes up for in skill.  Another event that has the best of the best attracts the best in sports and entertainment making this a must attend event.

The Champions League Final

May 22, 2010.  Madrid, Spain

The best soccer club teams in Europe (we won’t start a debate here) compete in this yearly league and tournament for bragging rights.  Winning and qualifying from their domestic leagues and playing in a tournament that mimics the basic World Cup format creates a drama that is nearly unparalleled in sport.  Also, it competes with the World Cup final in shear talent present on the field.

Summer and Winter Olympics

Feb. 12th, Vancouver, Canada

They occur every 4 years on a two year alternating pattern.  A truly world sporting event, the Olympics bring together some of the world’s most finely tuned athletes in competitions that test their mental and physical limitations.  Nations take great pride in the medal count of their athletes and the Games can help bring nations together in trying times. 

The Great American Beer Festival

End of Sept., beginning of Oct.

Denver, CO.

The most popular and famous  beer festival  in the US which is hosted over a 3 day period at the Colorado Convention Center in beautiful Denver.   There are over 450 brewers (majority are micro/craft brewers) and 2,100 beers at your disposal to sample.  This is a must for any beer lover as you will discover new flavors, the latest in the brewing industry, and your next favorite beer.    

Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday

Feb. 16th, 2010.  New Orleans, LA 

A legendary parade known for it’s excessive drinking, craziness, and women exposing themselves for plastic beads.  Floats and thousands of people flood Bourbon Street in the French quarter of New Orleans for this event.  This is a must see event as people of all age groups enjoy this legal Louisiana holiday.

Oktoberfest

Sept. 18th- Oct. 3rd Munich, Germany 

A festival that brings 6 million people together in Munich to eat and drink in Bavarian culture.  As there are many beer festivals in Germany this is the grand daddy of them all.  It includes parades, concerts, and many other events including the famous tapping of the first keg ceremony which officially kicks off the event.

Greek Isles

The Greek Isles are famous for their beaches, history, and great nightlife depending which Isle you visit.  Picturesque sun rises and sunsets are considered among the best in the world.  Some of the most notable Isles are Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete. The ideal time to visit is between May and July as in August all the Greeks head to the isles for their vacations.

There is something fascinating about structures that are 5,000 years old.  On the outskirts of Cairo is where you will find these ancient pyramids which were thought to be built as tombs for pharaoh's and their royal families.  A camel ride in the desert to view 1 of the 7 wonders of the world would be a truly remarkable trip.

Las Vegas

Sin City has quickly gotten the reputation as America’s adult playground.  However, this is a bit of a misconception as there is something for everybody in this oasis in the desert.  Massive casino hotels rule Las Vegas BLVD. and will practically do anything to keep you happy and keep you gambling.  We all have been ourselves or know someone who’s been there and can vouch for the city’s reputation.

Copacabana Beach

Understood to be 1 of the best beaches in the world, it is home to 2.5 miles of immaculate white sand where there are countless of activities to enjoy while getting a tan.  Be careful though because Brazil does have a bit of a bad rap for petty theft and prey on tourist but if you are alert this haven will make a long lasting impression on you.
